How to Improve Aim and Reaction Time in Call of Duty

I still remember the first time I played Call of Duty on my first-ever gaming PC. I immediately purchased Call of Duty because I thought I’d be so good at it the very first time I played. But damn, I was wrong. My aim was all over the place and my reaction time just sucked. It’s a common problem newbies face, but even long-time players experience it from time to time. What’s good about aim and reaction time is that both can be trained, so you won’t suck at playing Call of Duty forever.

If you watch a streamer on streaming services, you might think that it’s just a walk in the park, but it’s definitely not – well, unless you’re completely talented. Having played this game for decades, I’ve learned several tips that would help newbies improve their aim and reaction time when playing. Let’s start.

Before anything else, find the sensitivity that feels comfortable for you. A lot of players make the mistake of copying pro settings they see online, but everyone’s hand movement and mouse or controller setup are different. So if I say that what works for me is a 2.5 sensitivity and an 800 DPS, it won’t automatically make you a good player. It will depend on your setup and your comfort. It will be constant testing until you find what works best for you, so be very patient.

  • Don’t be ashamed to spend time on aim training.

Use the in-game training range or warm-up maps to practice tracking and flicking. The recoil (or basically how the gun moves upward or sideways when you shoot) is different for every weapon. If you’ve ever watched a movie of someone trying to fire a gun while TV streaming or even in shooting ranges, you’ll know how hard it is to keep the weapon steady after every shot.

That’s a consideration you need to make while playing COD because every weapon behaves differently. Some have strong upward kicks, while others drift slightly to the sides. If you don’t learn to control that, your shots will fly everywhere except where you want them to. So you need to learn how to control that. In the training range, experiment with different weapons and attachments. See how a grip or muzzle affects recoil control and handling.

Once you find a setup that feels comfortable, stick with it for a while because you need to make your muscle memory stronger so your hand just knows how to aim and adjust.

  • Also work on your positioning and awareness.

Your reflexes aren’t the only thing that matters when it comes to your reaction time. You should also learn how to predict what will happen next. Make sure to learn common enemy routes and pre-aim at corners where players usually appear. This will take a lot of time, a lot of matches, and a lot of frustration, but it will serve you well as long as you persevere.

Just keep in mind that you need a reliable internet provider like Dish Network for this because even if you practice every single day, lag won’t make you a good player. After all, you will keep missing your shot, so make sure that your internet is good to go.

  • Take breaks as needed.

One of the most common mistakes COD players make is to keep playing even though they’re already tired. I won’t lie, I used to be so addicted that even though I’m already performing poorly due to eye strain and fatigue, I kept playing. That’s how much I loved this game. But it’s not a good habit to keep.

When you’re tired, your focus drops, your reaction time slows, and your aim becomes sloppy. You might think playing longer means improving faster, but it actually does the opposite. Your brain and hands need rest to process what you’ve practiced and to perform better next time.

Ready to Be the Best COD Player?

You will need a lot of patience to be one of the best Call of Duty players. The thing is, there will always be a better player than you, and it can be a bit frustrating at times. However, treat the competition as a good thing and keep honing your skills. And most importantly, enjoy every game you play. Good luck!
